2016 Bentley Mulsanne Review, Ratings, Specs, Prices, For Sale, Interior - The Mulsanne is the best Bentley yet, hand-built to exacting
specifications and customizable with nearly anything you can imagine.
The iconically styled Mulsanne carries on all the marque's traditions to
present a regal, polished face to the world.
New for the 2015 model year was the Mulsanne Speed, a special
higher-performance model that nonetheless captures all of the luxury and
grace of the standard Mulsanne, while hiding a slightly darker, rowdier
side.
Under the hood of the Bentley Mulsanne is a 6.75-liter V-8 engine—an
important historical displacement for Bentley—but, like many modern
V-8s, wearing a pair of turbochargers. The resulting output is monstrous
in standard form: 505 horsepower and 752 pound-feet of torque. The
resulting acceleration is brisk, reaching 60 mph from rest in just 5.1
seconds, 100 mph in 11.6 seconds, and a top speed of 184 mph.
Opt for the Mulsanne Speed, however, and you’ll get something even
more special—and even quicker. Under the hood lies a very similar
6.75-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 engine, but it has been re-worked to
deliver greater power with utter smoothness and reliability. The
resulting 530 hp and 811 lb-ft of torque give the Mulsanne Speed plenty
of, well, speed. Running up to 60 mph happens in 4.8 seconds, 0-100 mph
takes 11.1 seconds, and the top speed is 190 mph.
That 811 lb-ft of torque figure also gives the Mulsanne Speed claim
to the title of the most twist from any gasoline series production car
in the world (now that the Bugatti Veyron’s run is finished).
The eight-speed automatic gearbox in the Mulsanne is smooth in
standard form. In the Speed, it’s recalibrated to take advantage of the
increase torque.
All Mulsannes get standard self-leveling air suspension with
continuous damping control, which handles the car’s 5,919-pound curb
weight admirably even in comfort mode, and adjusts to an even more
controlled setting with Bentley or, for the Speed, Sport mode selected.
When attempting to hustle the large Mulsanne Speed through curvier
sections of highway, the Bentley or Sport modes are preferable, as they
maintain ride comfort while better enabling the side-to-side transitions
required at a brisk pace. In the Mulsanne Speed, Sport mode also adds
heft to the steering, improving feel.
Around town, however, Comfort mode is the preferred mode of travel,
and here’s where the true brilliance of the Mulsanne Speed shines
through: apart from a unique set of wheels (machined from solid blocks
of aluminum) and a darker chrome grille, there’s very little visually to
distinguish the Mulsanne Speed from the standard Mulsanne; on the road,
there’s nothing at all to keep the Mulsanne Speed from accessing all of
the comfort and elegance of the standard car—it just holds a little
more pace in reserve. In other words, the Speed envelops the standard
Mulsanne’s capabilities without sacrificing anything.
Those shared capabilities are impressive, too, and most of them
relate to coddling occupants, entertaining them, or getting work done.
No fewer than 16 full cow hides constitute the door-to-door,
floor-to-ceiling leather upholstery, each hand-selected for its fine
grain and feel. Rich wood veneers (typically walnut, but many others are
available) wrap around the entire cabin. Finely finished metals lend
substance and heft to vent pulls and knobs. Switches and buttons are
largely made of glass, another material choice that lends to the air of
permanence and substance that abounds in the Mulsanne.
Seating, front and rear, is eminently comfortable, infinitely
adjustable, and truly beautiful. Opt for the executive rear seat package
and you gain reclining rear seats and iPad-based workstations that fold
out of the rear of the front seats. All Mulsannes are available with a
bottle cooler (for wine or champagne) with matching flutes that sit
between the rear passengers. The front seat is no help-only zone,
either: it’s rich and lavish and as well-finished as the rest of the
car.
Reading out the standard features list of the Bentley Mulsanne is an
exercise in excess, too: a specially-developed, flat-cut and
leather-bound carpet ensconces the interior floor, available in 22
colors; 23 seatbelt colors are available, with buckles color-matched to
the hides selected; the aforementioned wood, metal, and glass trim and
switchgear elements; the driver’s panel’s inverted aviation-style
gauges; an 8-inch display for the infotainment system, 14-speaker audio
system, and much more.
Other standard and available options include remote rear-seat control
of infotainment system; acoustic glazing with infrared reflective
layer; rear privacy blinds; front and rear cigar lighters with ashtrays;
a pop-out tray with iPhone 5/6 or other smartphone connectivity in the
center dash; CD, DVD, SD, and USB inputs; Bluetooth connectivity; and
much more.
The 2016 Bentley Mulsanne hasn’t been crash tested by the usual
agencies, but it does offer a host of standard safety equipment,
including front driver and passenger airbags; head and thorax airbags
for front and rear passengers; seatbelts with pyrotechnic pre-tensioners
and force limiters; ISOFIX child seat tethers; and a standard interior
volumetric alarm system.
If you’re concerned with gas mileage, the Bentley Mulsanne may not be
for you: the 2016 model rates 11 mpg city, 18 mpg highway, and 13 mpg
combined. This figure reflects the vast power output and substantial
curb weight of the Mulsanne; it does, after all, feature
cylinder-deactivation technology to disable four of the eight cylinders
while cruising at constant speed.

Overview
The style of the Mulsanne is a unique fusion of sportiness, coachbuilt
elegance and solidity. Echoing the Bentley S -Type of the 1950s, the
Mulsanne features a bold frontal design dominated by the traditional
Bentley matrix grille and highly prominent, classic round inner
headlamps with chrome surrounds, flanked by two, smaller outboard lamp
clusters, all featuring the latest in lighting technology. The iconic
'Flying B' retractable radiator mascot is available as an option.
The long bonnet, short front overhang and long rear overhang help to
convey a sense of power and movement, reinforced by muscular haunches
and sharply sculptured lines which flow gracefully from the front wings
to the rear. Uniquely designed 20-inch (and optional 21-inch) wheels
reinforce the Mulsanne's powerful, sporting stance.
Power to Spare
Of course it wouldn't be a Bentley if it didn't also offer an equally
impressive and powerful engine: enter the 6.75-liter V8. Sharing its
displacement and minor components with the legendary and historic
"six-and-three-quarters" eight-cylinder used in previous Bentley models,
the engine otherwise is totally revised for more power and improved
fuel economy. The pushrod mill also features two new control systems:
cam phasing and, a first for the ultra-luxury sector, a variable
displacement setup that can effectively turn the V8 into a four-cylinder
to save fuel during light-throttle cruising situations.
The big motor is capable of producing a prodigious 505 horsepower and
752 lb-ft of torque. It is matched to an eight-speed automatic
transmission that can be controlled with steering-wheel mounted paddle
shifters. Despite the fuel saving measures, the Bentley's firepower and
mass can't cheat physics, and fuel economy checks in at 11 mpg in the
city and 18 mpg on the highway.
An air suspension system with Continuous Damping Control (CDC) creates a
refined and comfortable ride at lower speeds, yet can reduce the
Mulsanne's ride height automatically at high speeds to reduce lift and
improve aerodynamic stability.
Craftsmanship and Technology Inside
The Mulsanne's cabin offers both old-world opulence and the latest in
technology features. It takes over 90 hours to complete, and is finished
in high-quality mirror-matched wood veneers, leather hides and
hand-finished stainless steel, as well as new touches such as beautiful
'glass' switches.
The upper dashboard houses an 8-inch multimedia screen, positioned
unobtrusively behind an electrically operated veneered door, while below
sits a stylish, leather-lined media player stowage drawer with
connectors for iPod, USB, Mini USB and 3.5mm aux input.
A 14-speaker audio system with Digital Signal Processing (DSP) and 6-CD
autochanger is provided as standard while the Naim for Bentley premium
audio system may be specified as an option. This forging of two British
luxury brands provides customers with the world's most powerful
production in-car amplifier with 2200 Watts, eight dedicated DSP modes
and 20 custom-made speakers.
A personalized keyless entry system allows multiple pre-programmed
configurations and automatically sets radio stations, phone book, seat
(including ventilation and massage modes, both front and rear), steering
column and seatbelt settings and even the electrically operated
rear-seat blinds for side and rear windows.
The keyless system also operates with the chrome door handles which
incorporate touch points to initiate communication with the key for
verification and entry. The Mulsanne also features keyless start.
Two option packages are offered. The Comfort Specification dresses up
the already opulent interior with super-soft headrests, footrests
trimmed in flat-cut carpet and duck down-filled loose cushions. The
Entertainment Specification ups the technology quotient by turning the
Mulsanne into a WiFi hotspot and adding picnic tables - crafted from
solid metal, fine veneer and hide - that are designed to accommodate an
iPad and a wireless keyboard.
Twin eight-inch LCD screens incorporated into backs of the front
headrests, a 20 GB hard drive and DVD player, a pair of Bluetooth
headphones and a remote control are all part of the Entertainment
Specification as well.
Buyers seeking the full Bentley ownership experience can order an
optional range of bespoke luggage pieces by Italian luggage specialists
Schedoni.
Mulsanne Mulliner Driving Specification
Bentley recently expanded the Mulsanne lineup with a model known as the Mulliner Driving Specification. It uses same engine as the standard Mulsanne, but features a more enthusiast-tuned suspension for improved handling.
Bentley recently expanded the Mulsanne lineup with a model known as the Mulliner Driving Specification. It uses same engine as the standard Mulsanne, but features a more enthusiast-tuned suspension for improved handling.
Keeping the Mulliner Driving Specification planted to the ground is a
unique set of 21-inch wheels, complete with race-derived titanium
fasteners. The two-piece wheels are available in both painted and
polished finishes, and can be fitted with Bentley's optional
self-leveling wheel badges.
The Mulliner Driving Specification also includes a unique set of 'Flying B' wing vents.
Inside the Mulliner Driving Specification passengers are coddled in
bespoke diamond quilted leather. Bentley says it even developed a unique
way of perforating leather just for the hides used in the Mulliner
Driving Specification.
But the highlight of the Mulliner Driving Specification interior is a
rear-seat bottle cooler with room for two full-size Champagne bottles.
The package, which is also available on other Mulsanne models, features
three hand-blown and hand-cut lead crystal champagne flutes. A close eye
will notice the flute design mirrors that of the Mulliner's wheel
spokes.
Mulsanne Speed
As its name implies, the Mulsanne Speed is a performance-focused variant of the ultra-luxurious Mulsanne sedan.
As its name implies, the Mulsanne Speed is a performance-focused variant of the ultra-luxurious Mulsanne sedan.
The Mulsanne Speed is powered by an evolution of the Mulsanne's
6¾-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine that produces 530 horsepower and a
prodigious 811 lb-ft. of torque from just 1,750 rpms. Linked to a
ZF-built eight-speed automatic transmission, the eight-cylinder sends
the 5,900-pound behemoth from zero to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds and on to a
top speed of 190 mph.
Bentley has fitted the Mulsanne Speed with a cylinder deactivation
system that turns the mighty V8 into a V4 when extra power is not
needed. The setup helps the Mulsanne Speed return 13-percent better
fuel economy than the stock Mulsanne. To put that figure into
perspective, the Mulsanne Speed's driving range has been extended by 50
miles.
A new Sport mode for the air suspension helps the driver exploit the
eight-cylinder's full potential by keeping body roll in check.
Selecting the Sport mode also makes the steering more responsive in
order to provide a more driver-focused handling. On the other end of
the spectrum, buyers looking for a more relaxed ride can select either
the Bentley or the Comfort mode.
Visually, the Mulsanne Speed stands out from a stock Mulsanne thanks to a
darker radiator grille, model-specific headlights and blacked out tail
lamps. The sedan comes standard with 21-inch directional style wheels,
meaning the wheels that go on the right and the left side of the car are
different, and it inaugurates four new colors including one called
Spectre that Bentley explains is inspired by reptilian skin.
